UK stocks experienced an uptick on Wednesday, buoyed by gains in consumer staples and defence sectors, as investors considered a report indicating that Finance Minister John Healey is likely to refrain from additional borrowing in the upcoming budget later this month.

The blue-chip FTSE 100 index rose 0.47% to 10,700.08 points by 10:06 AM, while the midcap FTSE 250 climbed 0.8%.

  • UK’s Finance Minister John Healey is anticipated to finance new initiatives via increased taxes or spending reductions instead of additional borrowing, as reported by the FT on Wednesday.
  • In a distinct endorsement, the IMF supported Britain’s fiscal strategy, advising it to “stay the course” on deficit reduction. This stance contrasts sharply with other major economies that currently lack a coherent plan to curtail borrowing amidst increasing interest rates.
  • Meanwhile, the Chief Economist of the Bank of England, Huw Pill, expressed scepticism regarding market expectations for four rate hikes in the upcoming year, even in light of increasing inflation risks.
  • “The BOE’s caution is well established, and given the weakness of the labor market, any hike would be framed as ‌insurance,” said Geoff YU.
  • Among consumer staple firms, Unilever gained 1%, while British American Tobacco also saw a 1% increase. In contrast, spirits maker Diageo experienced a rise of 1.6%.
  • Luxury fashion firm Burberry opened new tab gained 2.9%, the most on the FTSE 100.
  • Big Yellow rose 5.8% after activist investor Ancora called for a strategic review, stating that the self-storage firm trades at an unjustified discount and could attract takeover interest.
  • Admiral opens new tab slipped 1.5% after Peel Hunt cut its price target, warning the insurer’s UK motor policy growth could slow as it raises rates to protect margins.
  • The broader non-life insurers slipped 1.1%.
  • Defence products manufacturer Chemring experienced a 3.8% increase following its Roke unit’s establishment of a partnership with a significant US contractor, which includes an initial order valued at $16 million and a minimum agreement of $170 million over a five-year period.
  • Investors are poised for the release of US inflation data later today, while UK August GDP figures are set to be unveiled on Thursday.
