FTSE Futures Morning Update on 20 February 2019

The FTSE 100 Futures is trading at 7,137.20 up with +0.09% percent or +6.40 point. The CAC 40 Futures is trading at 5,167.00 up with +0.03% percent or +1.50 point. The DAX Futures is trading at 11,318.50  up with +0.09% percent or +10.40 point. The EURO Stoxx 50 Futures trading at 3,241.50  with a loss of -0.02% percent or -0.50 point.

TODAY’S FACTORS AND EVENTS

 London equities slipped, as investors digested what analysts termed “strong” jobs data but disappointing results from HSBC and the pound snapped higher on reports that the so-called ‘Malthouse Compromise’, requiring Westminster to renegotiate the Irish backstop or pursue a managed ‘no deal’ withdrawal from the European Union, was now dead.

The FTSE 100 dropped by 40.30 points or 0.56% to 7,179.17 as Sterling jumped by almost a full percentage points versus the US the dollar to trade at 1.3044 and by 0.71% versus the euro to 1.1506.

UK and European officials were said to be working on a new legal text for the backstop plan to avoid a hard border in Ireland, Bloomberg reported. Brexit Secretary Stephen Barclay and Attorney General Geoffrey Cox are holding talks in Brussels this week ahead of the key 27 February vote in the House of Commons.

For the day the FTSE 100 closed at 7,179.17   with a loss of -0.56% percent or -40.30 point. France’s CAC  40 closed at 5,160.52  with a loss of -0.15% percent or -8.01 point. Germany’s DAX closed at 11,309.21 up with +0.089% percent or +10.01 point.

For the day the Dow is trading at 25,891.32 up with +0.031% percent or +8.07 point. The S&P 500 is trading at 2,779.76 up with  +0.15% percent or +4.16 point. The Nasdaq Composite is trading at 7,486.77 up with +0.19% percent or +14.36 point.

In other parts of world, Japan’s Nikkei 225 is trading at 21,431.49 up with +0.60% percent or +128.84 point. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng is trading at 28,502.42  up with +0.97% percent or +274.29 point. China’s Shanghai Composite is trading at 2,761.22  up with +0.20% percent or +5.57 point. India’s BSE Sensex is trading at 35,582.86 up with +0.65% percent or +230.25 point at 12:15 PM.
