TODAY’S FACTORS AND EVENTS
European stocks closed on a mixed note after unexpectedly weak US consumer price data for May forced traders to reconsider their expectations for the US central bank’s policy meeting later in the day at the last minute.
Although futures markets had fully priced-in a 25 basis point hike in the Fed’s main rate, the odds assigned to another increase by the end of 2017 stood at just 42.4%, according to the CME’s Fed Watch tool, contrary to recent signals from policymakers on the Potomac for up to two more hikes this year on top of Wednesday’s move.
At the close, the benchmark Stoxx 600 was down by 0.30% to 387.58, alongside a 0.35% drop in the Cac-40 to 5,243.29, although the German Dax managed to eke out an advance of 0.32% to 12,805.95.
In parallel, the Stoxx 600’s subindex of lenders’ shares tumbled 1.13% to 179.85 points.
Data from the US Department of Labor revealed the country’s CPI slipped from a 2.2% pace for April to 1.9% in May (consensus: 2.0%), amid declines in several core categories of goods.
